Fifty Nine

In a couple of days our nation turns a healthy 59 years as a democratic republic. What is one single greatest achievement in all those years that we should all be proud of?

Once the great physicist Richard Feynman was asked...If in some catastrophe all of science was lost, what one piece of knowledge that if preserved, would help mankind regain its scientific achievement? His answer was simple...that everything was made of atoms!

Similarly, if our country was heading toward a catastrophe, the one thing worth preserving would be democracy. Despite all the problems we face, I think it is our preservation of a democratic way of life within a highly diverse and pluralistic society that stands out as our single greatest achievement.
